From Cologne to Gdańsk by train From Cologne to Gdańsk by train

After having already travelled by train to our project meetings in Spain, Estonia, and Italy as part of the project “Children in the Climate Crisis”, it was clear that we would also take the train to our next project meeting in Gdańsk (September 30 – October 2, 2025).

From Cologne, this is not very complicated – we only need to change trains once in Berlin. At 9:45 we board ICE 857 to Berlin, which arrives punctually at the Ostbahnhof at 14:27. From there, it is just one platform over: at 15:02 the EC 231 departs, arriving in Gdańsk Główny at 20:24. The Gdańsk main station is one of the most beautiful railway stations in Poland and is located right next to the picturesque Old Town. From here, we can easily walk to the famous Długa Street (Ulica Długa), whose reconstructed Renaissance facades recall the splendour of the former Hanseatic city.

Modern Gdańsk stands out for its reliable tram network and diverse range of museums. Particularly noteworthy are the European Solidarity Centre, which we also visited as part of the project meeting, and the Museum of the Second World War.

By the way, since our last train journey through the nearby Baltic region, quite a bit has changed there: since January 2025, it is possible to travel from Vilnius to Tallinn in a single day – back then, we still needed an overnight stay in Riga.
